Check Out Our Feature Tattoo Story
Vanessa is a 21-year old administrative assistant. She is part-Cherokee, and has eight tattoos: three on her shoulders and back, and five on her fingers. “My first tattoo is actually a feather. I got it for my birthday. It has a meaning of spirituality for me.” She is interested in art, music, poetry, and photography, and shows those in her tattoos – such as the quill pen on the middle finger of her right hand: “For writing, for poetry.” Being very symmetrical, she also has a tattoo on the middle finger of her left hand. This one is designed to look like a ring, and has a musical note in the center. “That’s a natural sign for music. It turns everything, to sharps and flats, it turns it all back to natural states. I like that meaning…turning things back to a natural state.”

Vanessa is planning a new tattoo with an eight-pointed compass rose. All points of the star will point up toward a heart-shaped moon - “bringing all directions together in the sense of community and peace; bringing the world together under one gravitational pull.” Earlier in the day, an elderly gentleman asked her if she’d thought about what she will look like in eighty years. “Yeah, I’ve thought about it. I think…if it gets all wrinkled, that I’ve had the eighty years prior to enjoy it.”
